‘Tis the season for cake smash photography!
I’ve been booked up recently with first birthday celebration shoots, and have a few more booked in before Christmas. The world of cake smash photography is a divided one – some clients absolutely love the fun of it, while others are less keen. Today, I’m sharing my thoughts on cake smash photography. Along with some suggestions to make it a little less sugary and over-indulgent.
First things first – yes, I absolutely do offer cake smash photography! They’re great fun and we can get some sweet, smile-filled photos. However, I like to structure my shoots to include a range of different setups, to ensure that the cake smash is just an element of a larger, more varied shoot. At the end of the day, it’s entirely up to you as the parents. If you’re into a cake smash – let’s do it! And if you’re not so keen, never fear, I have plenty of alternatives.
HOW A FIRST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION SHOOT WITH ME WORKS
First birthday celebration shoots with me are divided up into three parts. We start with a family-focused photo session at the beginning of the shoot – think lots of group photos, as well as solo photos of bub. Up next? Cake smash! This is then followed by a bubble bath shoot – super cute, as well as a very practical way to get all that cake cleaned up.
NOT INTO THE CAKE SMASH?
One of my favorite alternatives to the cake smash part of the shoot is a party shoot! We swap the cake out for fun decorations, music and costumes that’ll sure to have your wee one smiling and having a great time.
Another option is to go for a cupcake smash! Equally as cute, but way less mess. My go-to cake maker for cake smashes is Sweet Bakery and Cakery – delicious, beautiful cakes in a range of sizes, as well as cupcake alternatives.
If you’re looking for something a wee bit healthier, go for a “fruit cake” (and no, I don’t mean the awful dry cake that comes out at Christmas!). Slice up watermelon as a base, and stack fresh chopped fruit to create a tower – just as much fun for the little one to destroy!
ANOTHER OPTION
If you’re not too sure about a studio shoot altogether, why not book me to come along to your child’s first birthday party and capture all the fun and happiness? There’s always plenty of great photo opportunities being surrounded by family and friends. We can make time during the day to capture family and group shots, as well as all the laughs, celebrations and festivities.
However you choose to celebrate, there are so many ways to capture photos to remember your child’s first birthday. Whether you go for a cake smash photography shoot, or you opt for something a wee bit different. At the end of the day, as long as there’s plenty of smiles, giggles and love, you can’t go wrong!
