Planning your family photoshoot and wondering where to capture those special moments? Picking the perfect location is key to creating beautiful, meaningful photos that you'll cherish forever - and it can be a wonderful way to add that extra layer of meaning to your photos together as a whanau.
I’m always happy to suggest location ideas for family photoshoots - it’s one of my most often asked questions! But if you’re trying to think of spots that tell a little of your family’s story, I’ve popped together a bit of a guide to point you in the right direction. Plus, I’ve included a few of my favourite locations in the Wellington area, as a little bit of inspo!
How to Choose the Perfect Location
Choosing the right location, and time of day, can make all the difference in your photos. Here are some tips to help you pick the perfect spot:
Think meaningful: Consider locations that hold a special place in your family’s heart. It could be the park where you have picnics, the beach where your kids love to play, or even your own backyard. A meaningful location adds a personal touch to your photos and makes the experience even more special.
Consider the weather: Wellington weather can be a bit unpredictable, so it’s always good to have a backup plan. Look for locations that offer some shelter or can be easily changed if the weather takes a turn - think covered areas or big trees! My studio is based in Aotea and is a great backup if the weather really packs it in, but you’re still keen to go ahead with your family photoshoot.
Light and time of day: Lighting is crucial for stunning photos, so think about what the light will be like at your location (I can help with this!). The best times for natural light are early morning or late afternoon – these times are known as the golden hours, providing soft, beautiful light, and when families are involved, the afternoon is usually the best for moods! Avoid midday when the sun is harsh and can create strong shadows.
Crowd control: Think about how busy your chosen location might be. Popular spots can be crowded, which might make it hard to get those perfect shots without strangers in the background - plus, sometimes it can feel a little like you have an audience! Choosing a quieter location or visiting popular spots during off-peak times can help ensure you have the space to yourselves.
Picking a meaningful spot
When it comes to picking a location with significance, think about places that are part of your family’s story. Here are some ideas to inspire you:
Favourite park: If your family loves spending time at a particular park, this could be the ideal spot. It’s familiar, comfortable, and holds happy memories, plus quite often there’s a playground nearby for kids to enjoy. We can even get a few candid photos of you together as a family, playing and running around!
Beach day: If beach trips are a family favourite, consider a photoshoot by the seaside. The beach provides a stunning backdrop and lots of fun activities to capture, and we’re super lucky to have so many wonderful beaches around the Wellington region, from the wild Kapiti coastline to rugged bays around the south coast.
Your home: Sometimes, the most meaningful place is your own home. Backyard photos can be incredibly personal and relaxed, capturing the essence of your family life, and there’s the bonus of having your warm home right there as a backup for photos if the weather turns.
Special landmarks: Think about significant landmarks or places that are unique to your family’s history. It could be where you first met, where you got engaged, or a spot you visit every year.
Hidden gems: Explore and find lesser-known spots that might not be as busy but are equally beautiful. You might even find a new favourite spot to visit as a family - start a new tradition!
Five of my favourite outdoor spots for family photos in Wellington
If you're looking for some popular outdoor locations in the Wellington region, here are some of my faves that offer beautiful settings for family photos:
1. Whitireia Park
Whitireia Park offers breathtaking views of Porirua Harbour and Mana Island. Insanely beautiful and expansive views, windswept coastal cliffs and stunning golden hour light - too good! The park’s wide-open spaces are perfect for active families, allowing kids to run and play while the natural scenery creates an awesome backdrop for your photos. Whether you want a coastal vibe or a lush green setting, Whitireia Park has it all - but it also has some pretty wild wind at times, so keep that in mind when planning your outfits and hairstyles.
2. Katherine Mansfield Park
Tucked away in Thorndon, close to Wellington city centre, Katherine Mansfield Park is not only a beautiful spot but also a place rich in history. Named after the famous New Zealand writer, this park offers seriously charming gardens, historic trees, and elegant pathways. The blend of perfectly manicured gardens and natural beauty, plus great play areas and park benches and tables, makes it an ideal location for capturing both formal and candid family moments. And it’s very handy - its central location means it's easy to access and great for a quick photoshoot session.
3. Waikanae Beach
Waikanae Beach is a favourite for families who love the seaside. Sandy, rolling dunes, and Kapit Island peeking in the background, it provides a relaxed and natural setting for family photos, partiucularly if the sun’s out. The beach is spacious and usually not overly crowded, making it easier to find a quiet spot for your shoot. The stunning sunsets at Waikanae Beach also offer a perfect opportunity for those magical golden hour photos, adding that yummy warm glow to your family portraits. Again, as with most spots around the area, the wind can get wild on a stormier day - but there are some sheltered spots under the trees and around the lagoon which provide a more calm spot if things go pear shaped!
4. Owhiro Bay
Love a bit of rugged beauty and a touch of adventure? Owhiro Bay is a fantastic choice - just on Wellington’s south coast, Owhiro Bay features dramatic rocky shores, crashing waves, and epic views of the Cook Strait. This location is perfect for capturing dynamic and dramatic photos with a wild, natural backdrop. The tide pools and unique rock formations also add interesting elements to your photos and can be fun for the kids to explore during the shoot.
5. Pauatahanui Inlet
Pauatahanui Inlet is serene and tranquil most days, with smooth water around the bays and diverse native bush. The inlet offers a peaceful setting with beautiful reflections on the water, lush wetlands, and scenic walkways. It’s an excellent spot for families who love nature and want a quiet, intimate setting for their photos. The combination of water, greenery, and open skies provides a versatile backdrop for both close-up portraits and wide scenic shots, and make for a great opportunity to get outdoors with the fam.
Choosing the perfect location for your family photos is all about finding a spot that feels right for you and holds significance. Whether it’s a favourite park, a stunning beach, or your own backyard, the location should reflect your family’s personality and story. And if it’s all too overwhelming - hi!
