Family shoots are all about capturing the love, laughter, and genuine moments that make your family unique - and if you’re looking to shoot in a location that reflects that, why not have your family photoshoot at your own home?
While studio shoots have their perks (like consistent light, a controlled environment, and a selection of backgrounds and props), there’s something wonderfully relaxed and candid about a photoshoot in your own home, surrounded by your own things, and in a space that reflects your family.
So - if you’re stuck on location ideas for your family shoot - this one might convince you to go for an at-home photoshoot!
Part one: the perks of a photo shoot at home
Relaxed and candid: Home is a place of comfort. It’s familiar, it’s cosy, and it's also where your family feels most comfortable being themselves. If you want to take the pressure off, going for an at-home family session can be a great way to go.
Capturing real moments: What I love about an at-home shoot is that we can take photos that tell the story of your day-to-day. Yes - we’ll grab photos of you all together as well - but I love when families choose to capture more candid activities, like baking cookies in the kitchen, playing in the backyard, or snuggling on the couch. They’re the kind of memories that give you the warm fuzzies - so why not incorporate them in your family shoot?
Memories in your own space: I love incorporating wee storytelling elements in my family photos - like family photos hanging on the wall in the background, your kids’ favourite toys in the shot, or even bringing your cat or dog in for a few snaps! Plus, it’s super sweet to look back on photos that capture your family in the place where you’ve made so many memories.
Accessibility to toys and snacks: Oh, this is always a win! When you’re at home, you have easy access to all their favourite toys, snacks, and comfort items - ideal for photo bribery, or for bringing in a distraction!
Suitable for all ages: An at-home shoot works for kids of any age, from newborns to teenagers. Newborns can stay cosy and you don’t have to worry about packing everything up to take to another space, and you have everything on hand that you need. Toddlers and young kids can play with their favourite toys in their own space, while older kids can showcase their personalities through their rooms or hobbies.
Part Two:Tips for a Successful At-Home Shoot
Keen on an at-home family photoshoot? Yay! I’ve popped together a few tips for getting things ready for the day.
Prepare your space: While we want to capture your home as it is, a little preparation can go a long way. You don’t have to go full Marie Kondo - but tidy up the areas where we’ll be shooting, and remove any clutter that might be distracting (like tissue boxes or washing baskets). Don’t worry – it doesn’t have to be spotless, just a wee bit more photo-ready!
Plan activities: Think about some activities that your family enjoys and that we can incorporate into the shoot. Whether it’s reading a book together, playing a game, or baking something delicious, these activities will help keep everyone engaged and create natural photo opportunities.
Dress comfortably: Choose outfits that are comfortable and reflect your family’s style. Coordinating colours can look nice, but avoid anything too matchy-matchy. The goal is to look like yourselves, just a slightly polished version. I’ve got some handy tips for choosing outfits here!
