From "I Do" to Baby #2: The Joy of Capturing a Family’s Milestones

As a photographer, there’s something incredibly special about being invited into people’s lives - not just for one big event, but for all the little (and not-so-little) moments that follow.

It starts with a wedding day, full of love, laughter, and maybe a few happy tears. Then, before you know it, I’m photographing a maternity session, then a newborn curled up in their parents’ arms, a first birthday cake smash, a growing family, and eventually, round two as another little one joins the mix.

And there’s a really special place in my heart for those families who consistently laugh at my dad jokes.

Being a family’s go-to photographer is more than just snapping pictures - it’s about telling their story, watching them grow, and honestly - becoming like another person in their family.

So, let’s talk about why working with the same photographer over time is the way to do it (in my humble opinion) - and how to make the most of it!

Why having your own family photographer is an absolute win

Consistency in style – Your photos will have a beautiful, cohesive look over the years, making albums and framed prints blend seamlessly - this is because every photographer has their own style, their own editing techniques and their own vibe. And while things will still change a bit over time - choosing the same photographer means it really reads as a cohesive story, and you can create albums from different shoots that really look good.

Comfort & connection – When you already know your photographer, there’s no awkward “getting to know you” phase - you’re relaxed, your kids are at ease, and your photos feel natural. You know what to expect! It’s hard to really feel super comfortable in front of a total stranger - but when you keep going back to the same photographer, it’s like a wee reunion.

They know your story – I remember the inside jokes from your wedding speeches, the way your little one scrunches their nose when they laugh, and how important that one family heirloom is to your portraits. And - I remember names! A very handy skill when you’re wrangling your extended family for that big group shot. I am not afraid to call people out.

Easier, stress-free sessions – I know your best angles, your preferred way of doing things , and what works best for your family dynamic - meaning less time stressing, more time enjoying the moment.

The photography journey: some key milestones to capture
Working with the same photographer means we get to document so many important moments together. Here are some of the biggies (in a traditional trajectory - but if you do things your own way - big yes from me!)

The engagement shoot
The start of your journey together - this is where I first get to capture your love story in all its glory. And man, are you two glowing, because - you just got engaged! Engagement shoots are a fantastic way to get a feel for how your photographer works, their style and their communication.

The wedding day
From getting ready to dancing the night away, your wedding is one of the biggest days of your life - and I’m right there with ya! This is a wonderful opportunity for me to get to know all your friends and family, too - especially when we’re wrangling in all the great aunts and uncles for the big group shot.

Maternity sessions
For quite a few of my couples, the next time I hear from them is when a baby is on the way!

🤰 Make the most of your maternity session by:

  • Scheduling between 30-34 weeks when the bump is beautifully round, but you’re still comfortable.

  • Including partners, siblings, or even pets to make it extra special.

  • Bringing sentimental items - baby scans, a tiny pair of shoes, or a special blanket can make the session even more meaningful.

Newborn photos
There’s nothing quite like those first few weeks - when they’re so tiny, so curled up, and sleeping most of the day (or at least pretending to!). Newborn sessions capture all the little details - the teeny fingers, button noses, and sleepy snuggles that pass by in a blur.

🍼 Tips for a smooth session:

  • Book while you’re still pregnant—aim for a session in the first two weeks after birth.

  • Keep baby happy with a full tummy (I keep the studio super cosy and warm!)

  • Relax - newborn sessions are all about patience, cuddles, and going at baby’s pace!

Smash that cake - first birthdays!
One whole year already?! Time flies, and what better way to celebrate than with a first birthday photoshoot? Cake smashes, bubble baths, or simple milestone portraits - this session is all about capturing the personality that’s starting to shine through (and honestly, it’s one of my fave stages! Chaos and laughter and fun!)

🎂 Fun ideas to make it unique:

  • A themed cake smash (pastel, boho, jungle vibes - whatever suits your little one’s personality!).

  • Bring a favourite toy or book to capture what they love at this stage.

  • Include parents and siblings - it’s a big milestone for everyone!

Growing families
As your family grows, so do the photo opportunities! Whether it’s welcoming a second (or third!) baby, celebrating milestones like school years, or even planning a multi-generational family shoot, having a trusted photographer means capturing it all without the stress. And by this point - you’re all pros at having your photos taken, and it shows.

👨‍👩‍👧 Tips for stress-free family shoots:

  • Pick a location that feels right - beach, park, home, or studio.

  • Keep outfits coordinated, but don’t go full matching-mode—think complementary colours instead.

Family reunions and milestone birthdays

Love a family reunion or a big 60th birthday! It’s SUCH a great opportunity to get updated family photos - because how often are you all together?

💡 Best ways to use these photos:

  • Create an annual family album with your updated images.

  • Gift framed prints or photo books to grandparents (Get the grandkids to recreate old family photos - such a fun gift idea!)

  • Use photos for holiday cards or milestone celebrations!

How to lock down a photographer!
You’ve found the one - and by the one, I mean the one photographer you want to capture all the best bits. Yay! Here are some pro tips for making the most of it:

Plan ahead: Book your key milestones in advance to ensure you secure your preferred dates (especially for weddings and newborn sessions).

Stay in touch: Regular check-ins with your photographer mean you can chat about ideas, styling, and what’s next.

Create a visual story: Consider printing albums that showcase your family’s journey - from wedding to babies to beyond.

Embrace the chaos: Some of the best family photos come from real moments - messy, giggly, full of love. The best memories aren’t always posed!

So, if you’re looking for a photographer who will really get to know you, celebrate your moments, and tell your family’s story in a way that feels natural, fun, and genuinely you - you know where to find me.
